NO SURGERY – at least for now!!!!

I took Giovanna in for her annual visit with the upper extremity specialist and the semi – annual visit with her surgeon.  While there is much improvement on some fronts, there are also concerns on other fronts.

The upper extremity doctor is pleased with her progress.  We talked about the oral-motor issues that are affecting the progress of her speech.  It is now time to determine what kind of arthrogryposis she has.  There are about 3 or 4 different types and knowing which type she has might make a difference in her speech therapy.

When I met with Dr. G to discuss the potential of a second surgery, he was shifting back and forth.  He was asking what was new in my life from which we started talking about my dad and his recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s.  His mother also has Parkinson’s.  We compared notes.  Since her right foot is not as “severe” as her left was, he is not in a hurry to do the surgery on her right and thinks that we can do a lot by using inserts, etc.  His closing comment to me was, “You have enough on your plate, no need to add surgery to it.”

I am thankful as it removes one of the barriers to making a ministry trip to Switzerland in January.

So we await the appointment with the geneticist to determine what type of beast we are dealing with and go back in 6 months to see Dr. G and in a year to see Dr. VanHeest.

Life is good and God has been gracious.
